Death Arrives – Lockdowns Now Demonstrably Indefensible

The survival rate of COVID-19 is now in the range of 99.35% – 99.74%, per CDC data. But even this high rate is almost certainly on the conservative side as it does not include all unidentified cases, an important data point which scientists continue diligently to try to quantify.

Moreover, COVID cases are rising but COVID deaths are falling.

Conversely, grimly, deaths from the lockdown have moved from projection to reality and are rising.

Moreover, the JAMA study found huge increases in excess deaths from underlying causes such as diabetes, heart disease and Alzheimer’s disease in Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania – the five states with the most COVID-19 deaths in March and April. New York City experienced the biggest jumps, including a 398% rise in heart disease deaths and a 356% increase in diabetes deaths.

Add to that

… an increase of 10,000 more breast and colorectal cancer deaths in the U.S. over the next decade.

In fact, 35% of “excess deaths” early on in the pandemic were not caused by the disease itself.

“But a third possibility, the one we’re quite concerned about, is indirect mortality — deaths caused by the response to the pandemic,” [Dr. Steven] Woolf said. “People who never had the virus may have died from other causes because of the spillover effects of the pandemic, such as delayed medical care, economic hardship or emotional distress.”

… in part, because the unjustified panic tone by which some governors initially raised the alarm about the disease scared people away from getting vital medical treatments.  Longer lasting and almost certainly more profound will be the impact – deaths and exacerbation of health conditions – of the loss of health insurance by millions of people forcibly, unnecessarily placed on unemployment by governors who overreached and over-reacted.

No country has ever responded to a pandemic, however deadly – and this one is the opposite – with a lockdown.  Now we are witnessing why, in real time and real life as lockdown deaths begin to climb.

Equally important in a different way is the destruction of people’s lives, livelihoods and businesses as certain governors strangle business revenue and wages in their state via lockdown – an inexorable decimation of revenue streams, long term revenue structures and jobs.  (The corresponding impact of this revenue loss on the state and local tax base is not of particular concern to myself and most other people; special interests and special interest-motivated elected officials may have a different take on such collateral damage from the lockdown.)

It is now downright dangerous that lockdown governors like Gina Raimondo and Charlie Baker studiously disregard all of the positive developments and critical new information about COVID-19 but continue to act, in demeanor and executive action, as though we are experiencing the bubonic plague and, medically, are still in the fourteenth century.

The continuation of the lockdowns is now completely indefensible.  They must end immediately, with protection of our precious, vulnerable population. Lockdowns are now demonstrably, completely unmoored from science, data, real life and very real death.

More fact-free rants and anecdotes without data brought to us by the RICFP. 140,000 Americans dead (and getting worse) and the writer fails to mention the disastrous national response to this pandemic. That’s just not going to get you taken seriously.

She thinks citing statistical distractions about pandemic-related causes of death (rather than pure pandemic) variations take away some of the stain on Washington.

And then of course the real point of the story…politics and taxes (who she claims is, “not of particular concern to myself”) . The conclusion/accusation that “all of the positive developments and critical new information about COVID-19″ that Gina Raimondo and Charlie Baker supposedly “studiously disregard” aren’t mentioned here. Maybe she can share those with us in a future post.

“… that “all of the positive developments and critical new information about COVID-19″ Gina Raimondo and Charlie Baker supposedly “studiously disregard” aren’t mentioned here. Maybe she can share those with us in a future post.”

All listed in this post, with the biggest one of all – the very high survival rate – at the top of the list of critically important items that Baker and Raimondo are studiously ignoring to the serious detriment of the residents of their states.

Thanks for visiting the Ocean State Current!

If you think 8,500 MA deaths and 1,000 RI deaths aren’t a “serious detriment” to those residents impacted, I suggest you reevaluate your priorities. Telling their survivors and families about updated “survival rate” statistics isn’t much solace to them.

You have absolutely no evidence that “Baker and Raimondo are studiously ignoring” anything and and to assert that is yellow journalism.

What do you think an acceptable “survival rate” needs to be before economic sanctions are implemented? Don’t worry, I’m not expecting a response.

P.S. Thanks, Justin for tagging “the GA and unions”, neither of which are mentioned in this post.

I’ll reply. It’s interesting that all I took away from your comment was that you are under the impression that those that have unfortunately died this year have all succumbed to COVID-19. That’s absolutely VERY WRONG. Granted, LOTS of COVID-19 ‘related’ deaths are being reported but MOST have occurred among our MOST SUSCEPTIBLE RIers…folks in long-term care/nursing facilities. Many of those folks were not robust to begin with and would likely be susceptible to other diseases/viruses too. It’s too hard to say what really caused these deaths (it’s harder to find honest data) but if we’re concerned with the data at all, one has to also look at the loss of life, say, last year and how it compares today. You’ll be disappointed to learn that even IN SPITE OF COVID-19, overall U.S. deaths ARE THE SAME! When was the last time that a country was shut down for flu? It’s a major KILLER each year. When was the last time a country shut down for (pick your disease and add here)? We still sell cigarettes…yet tens of thousands die from lung cancer. We still sell alcohol…yet tens of thousands die from its impact annually. You’ve failed to recognize that politicians are jumping on COVID-19 to destroy America…if not in time for this upcoming election, but for our future beyond. Democrats are evil…they only want America DESTROYED…COVID-19 is just their latest tool. And those that support their efforts…they are evil as well. Think before you speak…then folks will take you more seriously. Otherwise, they’ll laugh at you and pity you for your ignorance. MAGA!

Hospitals and doctors have an incentive to label any death as C-1984-related cuz it pays them better. That makes mortality stats worthless, no better than if they were fabricated out of pure air:

Hospitals and doctors do get paid more for Medicare patients diagnosed with COVID-19 or if it’s considered presumed they have COVID-19 absent a laboratory-confirmed test, and three times more if the patients are placed on a ventilator to cover the cost of care and loss of business resulting from a shift in focus to treat COVID-19 cases.

Satan must be selling snow cones in Hades now, cuz for once I agree with Lou: C-19 is def more deadly than they are letting on. Just look at this tragic case here of an otherwise healthy person succumbing to it =>

And everyone knows you can get shot 18 times but die of covid-1984 before you bleed out. That’s just science =>

I know Lou was gonna reply to this one, but he’s got the day off so allow me to post his reply for him:
