More on the Chafee Announcement: Isn’t RI Already a State that the President Can be “Proud” Of?

In comments Thursday (sorry, I heard them on the fly and cannot find a link) following upon his conversion to a Democrat, Governor Chafee cited President Barack Obama as part of the reason for his switch.  He went on to say that he wanted to make Rhode Island a state that the President would be proud of.

The President is a Democrat.  So wouldn’t the parameters by which he would determine that he was proud of something be Democrat policies and principles?

Rhode Island has been controlled overwhelmingly by Democrats for over seventy five years.  Is there any question that they have implemented Democrat policies and principles?  And the results:

The state has the sixth highest state and local tax burden.  It has some of the worst roads and bridges in the country.  The state’s unemployment rate has hovered at or near the bottom in recent years, a state of affairs significantly exacerbated by a similar ranking of the business climate.  For many years, public education achievement has ranked in the bottom 20% yet, paradoxically, spending per student has been one of the highest in the country.

The Governor’s stated goal – making Rhode Island a state that the (Democrat) President can be proud of – has already been achieved.  Regrettably, however, it is not at all an admirable or desirable state of affairs.
