A Dark Cloud Loomis Over URI

Need we even ask the standard “what if” question about how this sort of thing would be received were the ideologies reversed?

“Michael Reinoehl is the guy who killed the fascist in Portland last week. He admitted it and said he was scared the cops would kill him. Well, now the cops have killed him,” [University of Rhode Island history professor Erik] Loomis wrote in the September 4 blog post. …

In the comment section of the blog post, one reader challenged Loomis by writing, “Erik, he shot and killed a guy,” referring to Reinoehl.

Loomis responded by saying, “He killed a fascist. I see nothing wrong with it, at least from a moral perspective.” He further added that “tactically, that’s a different story. But you could say the same thing about John Brown.”

Even with the armor of tenure, a conservative version of Erik Loomis would have trouble keeping his job after such a comment, yet as it is, the matter has yet even to be taken up by the local mainstream news media.

Of course, Loomis’s support for the murder of political opponents isn’t going entirely unnoticed in Rhode Island.  Republican state Representative Brian Newberry asked on Twitter, “why are our (thinly stretched) tax dollars paying for this man to teach (or do anything else) at URI? Would the President or Board care to comment?”

Most people who object will simply shake their heads and reduce their likelihood of supporting the university or considering it for themselves or their children.  When budget season comes around, many might not even remember why pleas for more taxpayer money seem less appealing to them this time around.

Between this incident and the other gone-national progressive story at URI, about removal of a 70-year-old mural because it is too faithful a reflection of an earlier era,  I can’t say I’m very interested in updating my contact information as the university keeps asking me to do.  I’m also all the more confident that my eldest child made the right decision and went somewhere else for college.

It’s to be expected that outfits like Evergreen State (whuzzat?) beclown themselves, but URI? Interesting that the guy offering moral instruction cites John Brown, who proved to be the best recruiter the Southern militias could have hoped for. Harper’s Ferry stiffened spines all over the South.
In other developments, 40% of the 5 million new gun owners are…women. What can they possibly be thinking?

  • Rhett Hardwick

Only a history professor could come up with John Brown. A fruitcake if I recall correctly.

US-AG William Barr actually called Reinoehl’s killing “a significant accomplishment”

In fact, it was totally bungled. That kid called himself “100% Antifa” and prolly had tons of information on that terrorist outfit’s members, whereabouts, and activities. Killing him silenced him so a trve conspiracy theorist — one who believes that the FBI is actually pulling the strings of antifa — would label him 2020’s Lee Harvey Oswald

Of course he could have just surrendered and pleaded the 5th, but when life in ADX Florence or a death sentence is hanging over you the Feds have lots of carrots and sticks to make you sing like a canary

As for Loomis… “Liberal makes outrageous remarks that would get a conservative fired” is barely worth noting anymore… much like those used-to-be-funny-but-they’re-so-common-they’re-not-anymore stories like “Bank Robber drops ID at scene” or ” Bungling Burglar gets stuck in chimney”

    • Lou

“In fact, it was totally bungled.”…would you expect anything less from this administration?

If you think Barr has any credibility left after trying to defend the Orange Fuhrer in his civil suit you might be alone (well, maybe not on this blog).

      • ShannonEntropy

Barr refuses to prosecute BLM or antifa; instead it’s “catch & release” with the Feds

Antifa is a Jewish organization http://www.occidentaldissent.com/2020/06/07/jews-we-are-antifa/

        Barr is Jewish

        Coincidence ?? You tell me

        • Rhett Hardwick

Please Shannon! While I admit an unusual prominence of Jews in many social movements; “Jewish Conspiracy” is on a level with “Orange Man Bad”.

          • Lou

Shannon’s true colors are starting to show. Welcome to Trump nation, everybody feels empowered to crawl out from the shadows no matter how repugnant their views.

          • Rhett Hardwick

And coming from someone who espouses “repugnant views”.

          • Lou

Perhaps from your vantage point. But I challenge you to defend the misogyny, racism and now antisemitism we’ve recently seen from your fellow Trumpkin.

          • Rhett Hardwick

While I may not approve; I don’t see a defense as required, or necessary. If you haven’t noticed, this is America. People are entitled to their opinions. Also notice that you are not barred here.

          • Lou

Agreed. Although I don’t know if not barring me is a credit to America or the Koch Bros. and whoever else is funding the website. Either way, it’s appreciated.

          • ShannonEntropy

Us racist, misogynistic anti-semite (you forgot “Islamaphobe — I hate them too JK) deplorables *need* you here, Loo

It’s no fun being pure Evil unless there’s a Saint like you to fight the Evil Fight against

          • Rhett Hardwick

I notice JC is distinctly white, as opposed to Semitic.

          • Rhett Hardwick

And what result would obtain if I were to make such comments as yours on a progressive blog? Would I be tolerated? “Some people bring a smile wherever they go, some, whenever they go”

          • ShannonEntropy

I never said it was a “conspiracy”… I just noted some facts:

1.) Isreali newspaper Haaretz says that “Trump’s Attacks on Antifa Are Attacks on Jews”, basically equating the two groups

2.) AG Barr could stop the BLM / Antifa riots by prosecuting the rioters / arsonists / looters, but refuses to do so (( in fact, if you defend yourself against them at one of these riots, YOU are the one who’s gonna be arrested )), and

            3.) Barr is Jewish

Are these three connected in some way ?? I don’t know, but it seems like a mighty peculiar set of coincidences

          • Rhett Hardwick

While there may be a conspiracy of Jews, I wouldn’t call it a Jewish Conspiracy. Is law and order an Episcopal conspiracy? No idea of the reputation of Haaretz, is it an Israeli NYT? Considering what I know of the Founding Fathers, is America an Episcopal Conspiracy?

          • ShannonEntropy

Haaretz — which means “The Land” — is the oldest newspaper in Israel, which would make it the equivalent of the US’s Hartford Courant, which is a much better paper than the ProJo BTW

Not everyone acting together is a “conspiracy”. Fer ex, if 100 people all run out of a burning building the same morning, that wouldn’t necessarily be a ‘conspiracy’

  • ShannonEntropy

Turns out this story is much worse… URI endorses this guy while firing an employee who supported the police with a “Blue Lives Matter” flag:

Colleges & universities are turning into such ultra-leftist cess pools that I hope the ‘Rona wipes them all out and you need to get whatever academic credentials you need from online places

    • Rhett Hardwick

I am so glad I went to school where I did. The school has promised this confederate statue “Virginia mourns her dead” won’t go.

    • Lou

Many folks that claim they are constitutionalists seem to have a no understanding of the First Amendment and a skewed understanding of the Second. Granted, this guy may be a tool but he’s entitled to the same rights as you.

      • Rhett Hardwick

We understand that without the Second Amendment, the First Amendment is meaningless. “Skewed understanding”? How is that? The Supreme Court has declared the right to keep and bear arms is a personal right, not modified by any other language in that amendment. What people seem to fail to understand is that the Bill of Rights was a listing of rights “endowed by our creator”. They were not a grant of rights by the government, subject to withdrawal or modification.

        • Lou

“Supreme Court “? I though “activist judges” can’t change the plain language of the Constitution? So now some Amendments carry more weight than others and some clauses are more important than others?

“endowed by our creator”? Pretty presumptuous, no. Why do you think our “our creator” singled our Americans for this privilege? Who do you think was representing “our creator” during its drafting?

I’m not following the logic of not “subject to withdrawal or modification”, when that is the very definition of an amendment.

          • Rhett Hardwick

I have to suggest you read your history (not the Howard Zinn version) of how and why the Bill of Rights was adopted. Sorry about “endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights”, that’s American scripture. Thought you might be familiar with it.

          • ShannonEntropy

Loo is being deliberately obtuse to annoy us… nobody could be that stoopid as to misinterpret or twist the meaning of or answer with irrelevant tangents to virtually every sentence here someone writes

But just in case you really are that stoopid, Loo, “obtuse” means annoyingly insensitive or slow to understand

          • Rhett Hardwick

I know, I just needed the exercise.

      • ShannonEntropy

The guy is basically calling for his students to murder Trump supporters. That goes way beyond “free speech”

If a Trump supporter openly called for murdering Bernie or Joe supporters the Left would label it “hate speech” and that person could only hope that getting fired was the worst thing to happen to them

p.s. Now it’s the “Trump Virus” ?? You really crack me up, Loo !! BTW, I’m not “wishing” C-19 on anyone, I’m just hoping the recent outbreaks on various college campuses causes them ALL to get shut down… permanently
