Questions with Southern Fall River Casino Coming

I’d known that a casino looked likely in Fall River, but I’ve just learned via Twitter that it’ll be specifically in South Fall River.  The Fall River Herald doesn’t have much more detail than that, although it does report that the site will be revealed next week.  A special election in Fall River will be the last major civic hurdle.

Looking at a map of the city, and having some knowledge of the various neighborhoods, it looks very likely that the casino will land on Rt. 24, five to ten minutes away from the Sakonnet River Bridge from Tiverton to Aquidneck Island. Three questions come to mind:

  1. Will the knowledge that there’s a toll on the bridge (one for which there’s no way simply to pay cash) dissuade resort-goers from exploring the island?
  2. Will the knowledge that there are two toll bridges to get on and off the island (both of them charging both ways) make it that much easier for folks from the west and south to decide just to zip through Rhode Island using the toll-free I-Way in Providence?
  3. Following the map south, down 24, would a 0.0% sales tax in Rhode Island create incentive to use up some of those empty acres on the Ocean State side of the line with economically productive, tax-burden-distributing businesses?
