According to the most recent information available — a poll released by the Friedman Foundation for Educational Choice and the RI Center for Freedom & Prosperity — Rhode Islanders strongly support school choice, whether it means charter schools, tax credit programs to fund private school scholarships, or even scholarship programs that allow the tax money set aside to educate our children to go to any school that a student’s parents choose, public or private, secular or religious.

The poll shows that Rhode Islanders have very negative feelings about the system of schools run by the government and want school choice to be available as broadly as possible. People who oppose school choice, like the guy who sits on the other side of the table for the 10 News Conference Wingmen segment, are therefore left to argue why people should be forced to pay for a system that they do not like and should not be allowed maximum freedom within that system.

School choice opponents have to try to explain why parents should not be allowed to send their children to the best schools for them (unless they are wealthy enough to pay for education twice, once through taxes and once through tuition). Opponents also have to try to explain why Rhode Islanders should not be allowed to have the type of education system they want, one that gives parents the ability to provide their children with the opportunities that we all want them to have.

Their arguments are always structured to sound like they want to protect Rhode Islanders’ rights, but it always seems like a promise that more restrictions produces more freedom. Somehow.

Maybe what they really fear is that a better educated community will have less need to be told what it can and cannot do.
