10 News Conference Wingmen, Episode 22 (HealthSource Results & Government as Give-Away Business)

One point that I didn’t get to that ought to be made is in response to Bob’s suggestion that government shouldn’t try to hide it from people when they’re eligible for government programs.  I did respond that there’s a difference between hiding eligibility from people and leaving it up to them to decide whether they need to take the step of relying on government handouts, which used to be (and should become again) a resource of last resort.

The additional point to be made, however, is that HealthSource illustrates how government misrepresents to the people who’ll have to pay the bill exactly what it’s going to cost. The selling point of the exchange was that the federal government was going to pay Rhode Island to set up this Web site so that Rhode Islanders would have another option to purchase health insurance more cheaply, and that it would never cost state taxpayers money, with the added piece of helping an additional small number of people access government welfare programs, which would also be funded by the federal government.

Instead, they’ve spent federal money advertising the site predominantly attracting not the people who would make the exchange self-sustaining, but rather people who drive up costs to the government.  This squeezes other items in the budget (like roads and bridges) that we all use and it drains resources out of the economy.

As I said on the on-air segment prior to the video above, that’s not democracy, it’s a scam.
