Center Launches Student Video Contest for America’s 250th Anniversary
CRANSTON, R.I. (AP) — The Rhode Island Center for Freedom & Prosperity on Monday announced a statewide video contest inviting K-12 students to reflect on the nation’s founding ahead of the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Timed to coincide with Presidents Day and the upcoming birthday of George Washington, the contest asks students to create and post short videos explaining why they are proud to celebrate America’s semiquincentennial, known as America250. Submissions are encouraged to focus on the nation’s founding principle of liberty.
The initiative is being held in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Education’s “History Rocks! Trail to Independence Tour” and is sponsored by Americans for Prosperity, a national grassroots organization.
In announcing the contest, Center CEO Mike Stenhouse criticized Rhode Island’s current social studies standards arguing they present a negative portrayal of the country’s founding. He said the contest is intended to offer students an opportunity to express their perspectives on American history and civic ideals.
“Real patriots know that America’s true birthright is one of liberty. We are excited to hear from Ocean State youth about why they are proud to be an American; and how our God-given and Constitutional freedoms have impacted their lives or inspired their dreams,” said Stenhouse.
Prizes will be awarded in three grade categories. Three winners will each receive a $250 gift card, while six additional finalists will receive $100 gift cards. All nine finalists will also receive copies of the book American History in No Time.
Contest rules and submission details are available at RIFreedom.org/America250RI. Volunteer judges will include members of the Center’s newly formed young professionals network.
