Conservative Majority Blocks Progressive Superintendent’s Contract Extension in Chariho

WOOD RIVER JUNCTION, R.I. —  In a pivotal vote Tuesday night, the conservative majority of the Chariho Regional School Committee rejected a contract extension for Superintendent Gina Picard ending speculation about direction of the district. Picard has faced criticism from parents for her progressive agenda.

The proposed contract would have extended Picard’s tenure through June 2028 at a starting salary of $170,404.20 with provisions for annual salary adjustments, and enhanced benefit.

The vote, held at the Chariho High School Library, was the most closely watched item on a packed agenda. Chair Louise Dinsmore of Richmond along with members formed a majority that opposed the extension.

“THREE CHEERS. Following The Current’s piece last month, critical of this conservative majority appearing to cave under pressure from the loud Left … they have now redeemed themselves, in part, for taking a bold stand to improve education in Chariho,” said Mike Stenhouse, CEO of the Rhode Island Center of Freedom & Prosperity.

Picard, who has led the district since 2020, has faced increasing criticism from some parents and members of the public over her stances. The decision leaves the district without a confirmed leader beyond the current contract term.

It is unclear whether the committee will begin a new search or renegotiate with Picard.
