Ocean State Against Hate Are the Baddies

The photograph at the top of Steve Ahlquist’s Uprise RI post about Saturday’s political clash in Providence is of a young woman holding a large sign with words that are almost certainly more true than the protester realizes:

You No Longer Need a Time Machine to Stop Hitler

There are two senses in which this is correct.  The first sense is a sort of cosplay, in which left-wing protesters pretend that anybody who disagrees with them is just like Hitler.  You don’t need a time machine to re-fight historical battles if it’s good enough to go out on a field and pretend, and that’s what these progressives are doing.  Watch, for example, as white people behaving like fools shout at Candace Owens (who is black) as if she is the symbol of “white supremacy.”

The second sense in which the phrase is true is more disturbing.  Participants and supporters of these Antifa actions can stop fascism simply by stopping what they’re doing.  As Larry Gillheeney reported in this space, this Orwellianly named “Ocean State Against Hate” group explicitly wants to shut down other people’s free speech.  They physically blocked peaceful protesters, ripped away tents in an attempt to ruin expensive equipment in the rain, and assaulted people.  (Insert “allegedly” as needed.)

Indeed, fascism is explicit in the group’s logo, which contains the words “no platform for fascists.”  Naturally, they leave it to themselves to define “fascists,” which leaves “no platform” as the operative phrase.  They define their political opposition as “Nazis” so that they can elide the past violence of actual Nazis with presumed future actions that their fever dreams lead them to predict from their fellow Americans.  Thus, they claim it is “defense” to initiate physical altercations and deny others’ rights.

Frankly, their logo makes it seem that this inversion of their own fascism is conscious and brazen:

Seriously, if one were to seek to design a fake logo for fascists in Rhode Island, it would look a lot like this.  Stylistically, it’s of the same genre as the imaginary fascist logo from Pink Floyd’s The Wall and 20th Century fascist symbols.  Compare it with the Resist Marxism logo.

Ocean State Against Hate insists that its members “refuse to be fooled” by the peaceful expressions of free speech from groups like Resist Marxism, but it’s clear that those of them who are sincere are being fooled in the other direction.

At what point does one of them turn to another and ask, “Are we the baddies?
