Charles Callanan: Macro to Micro the World Has Changed Again

The world has just faced its most recent tectonic shift, and things will never be the same again. Over the last 150 years, civilization has had some remarkable moments. An entire generation of young men killed on the battlefields of WW1, where empires never recovered. The decision to rebuild Germany through the Marshall Plan that saved Western Europe and stopped global communism. The fall of the Soviet Union and breakup of the Eastern Bloc. 9/11 and the war on Islamic fundamentalism. All these historical events and others during this period have altered the very fabric of our civilization for good or ill. We are now at another of those crossroad events.

The virus itself will eventually fade, but in its wake a new world will begin to unfold. Over the last 40 years or beginning with Nixon’s visit to China, world manufacturing has gradually shifted to a country where labor was cheap and the outside world was not really affected by any of China’s internal or moral issues — out of sight and out of mind. When China issued its one-child rule or destroyed entire ecosystems for the next state plan, the world never blinked. Products were being shipped, and the prices were good.

While the average citizen in China may have struggled, the Communist party got rich.  Not just a little rich, but to the point where its own oligarchs, worried about a centrally controlled currency, were starting to hide their wealth in the West while trying to buy up as much of it as they could. Chinese manufactures and government undercut their competition while state-sponsored intelligence services stole intellectual property and patents. I dare say, go look at any new Chinese weapons system; they look remarkably like their Western counterparts. In short, China has been a very bad neighbor for a very long time, and it has been allowed.

Here are some of my thoughts on the matter. You can’t wipe out trillions of dollars of wealth while having your Italian grandmother die gasping for air and expect the world to give you a pass. Not going to happen. China has been a bad neighbor, a poor corporate citizen, immoral on many levels, and now this. They had information for months as this virus’s spread and did everything in their power to cover it up and save face. Now that it’s out in the open, they have tried blaming other nations and the U.S. military, using international media to be cheerleaders for them. While I’m pleased China shipped respirators to Italy, it’s too little too late. China as the center of the manufacturing world is about to come to an end.

What does the future hold? While much bad has happened, opportunity almost always arises in its wake. Mexico has certainly been an issue in the United States over the last three years, mostly for immigration and drug-related crime. What is coming next for Mexico and Central America? The return of manufacturing and along with it, jobs and a promise of a lucrative future. With that opportunity, there will also be requirements for massive change in terms of dealing with illegal immigration and the cartels.

Drug lords make billions, but now we are talking about trillions of dollars of the world’s manufacturing. They will not survive very long if they don’t stop the violence and the human trafficking. Its one thing to keep the Mexican government at bay; it’s an entirely different thing to threaten a world economy trying to realign and recover. If I were a drug lord, I would be looking to retire or pull a Joseph Kennedy and start finding legitimate sources of income. My feelings are they will be asked nicely once by some “intermediary”; after that, all bets are off and they will be considered enemies of national security with all that it entails. As far as illegal immigration and boarder control are concerned, this virus has been self-explanatory on that issue unless you are a thick-headed hard-core progressive Bernie Bro.

On the local level, what will that mean to us? Well, for political leaders, if you were hanging your hat on open boarders and sanctuary cities, get your résumé out. Even worse for those advocating for national socialism.

Socialism and its hopeless lack of freedom killed people. It was more important for China to keep on a good face than to tell the truth. If you are one of those who think it is racist to call a virus that originated in Wuhan China, spread by a communist socialist government, the “Wuhan Virus” and think that is the central issue here, please resign or beat your head against something hard until common sense returns.

After this is all over and the world begins to recover, we need to elect leaders who have done things beyond activism. I mean real things: served in military, built business, turned a wrench, farmed anything beyond door knocking and whining about being offended.
