Surge in K-12 Student Protests Tracked Nationwide, Including Rhode Island Walkouts

A national tracker documents 486 student walkouts and protests in U.S. based K-12 schools since 2022, with a sharp spike in 2026 tied to opposition against immigration enforcement under the Trump administration, according to Defending Education.

The organization’s K-12 Student Walkout and Protest Tracker relies on social media, news reports and press releases. It logs events across 48 states and the District of Columbia, affecting 245 districts and 523 schools. Defending Education notes external activist groups assisted in 88 cases, providing signs, promotion, and coordination.

Causes vary but anti-ICE actions dominated 2026. This year has seen 357 events so far, up from 52 in 2022. Earlier protests focused on gun control, pro-LGBTQ rights, climate change and pro-Palestine issues. The tracker calls totals a low-end estimate due to incomplete reporting.

In Rhode Island, hundreds of students walked out Jan. 30, 2026, protesting ICE enforcement. Schools included East Greenwich Public Schools, Moses Brown School, Narragansett High School, Providence’s Central, Classical and Hope high schools, and South Kingstown High School. The Party for Socialism and Liberation and the Providence Student Union aided the walkouts.

The Party for Socialism and Liberation, a far-left communist political party founded in 2004 after splitting from the Workers World Party, facilitated organization of the Rhode Island student walkouts. Its Ocean State branch coordinated logistics, promoted events, and joined coalitions rallying against ICE enforcement at the State House, consistent with its national push for socialist transformation and anti-imperialist activism.

The Providence Student Union is a youth-led nonprofit based in Providence. They also aided organization by promoting the walkouts as student-led actions against ICE injustices. It mobilized Providence Public School students to march on the State House, framing the protests in solidarity with national shutdown calls, though critics noted the adult involvement in promotion and coordination.

Trends show rising involvement from groups like Sunrise Movement and Students Demand Action, often in urban districts, disrupting classes amid national politics.

Defending Education highlights coordinated efforts by nonprofits, raising concerns over politicization in schools.
