Two Years for Gist

Multiple sources are reporting that the RI Board of Education has voted to give education commissioner Deborah Gist a new two-year contract (and assuming that she’s accepted). Dan McGowan of WPRI-TV (CBS 12) has the first full story up…

The state Board of Education voted Thursday to allow Gist to continue guiding the state’s public schools until 2015, a deal that will throw her square in the middle of an expected contentious Democratic primary for governor next year.

After meeting for nearly two hours behind closed doors, the 11-member board voted 7-3 to extend Gist’s contract, which was set to expire Friday. Board members Larry Purtill, Colleen Callahan and Mathies J. Santos voted against the deal and Jo Eva Gaines recused herself from the vote.

Multiple sources are confirming that Commissioner Gist has indeed accepted the offer.
