Immigrant Children as Political Chips

Slow to wake up, this morning, I watched this short video clip of Dinesh D’Souza talking about his new movie, America.  (Naturally, ABC had to bring on somebody else to use half the allotted time disputing its claims.)

The movie, as I’ve already mentioned, seeks to respond to a prevailing progressive narrative about American history that changes the focus of the lens so that it’s difficult to see what has been great about the United States in the shadow of the wildly inflated stains on its record.  We all know the story of the victims of America — Africans enslaved, Native Americans displaced, Japanese Americans interned, and so on.

One’s mind can’t help but turn to the humanitarian crisis at our southern border, with thousands and thousands of (mostly) Central American children having made the perilous journey to cross into this country without adult supervision.  The feds are calling them “unaccompanied alien children” (UACs).

We’ve learned that the Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) sought contractors to escort the “approximately 65,000 UAC in total … throughout the continental U.S.” in advance of the wave — which Democrat-supporting media, like the Washington Post, have been calling “unexpected” — back in January.  As Investors Business Daily argues:

Concrete evidence has shown up proving our earlier assertion: The breach of our border by waves of unaccompanied alien children was orchestrated by the administration based on a strategy straight out of the playbook President Obama studied as a community organizer. His goal is to get his way on immigration reform by overwhelming the U.S. Border Patrol and collapsing an already weakened system.

Or, in the words of President Barack Obama, himself:

We now have an actual humanitarian crisis on the border that only underscores the need to drop the politics and fix our immigration system once and for all.  In recent weeks, we’ve seen a surge of unaccompanied children arrive at the border, brought here and to other countries by smugglers and traffickers.

How quickly, do you think, will the progressives will add this administration’s complicity in the crisis to the litany of American evils, transferring blame for their own cynical use of human beings as pawns to their political opposition?

It isn’t the intransigence of those who want border security before any “comprehensive” solution is discussed — and who have every reason to expect the Obama Administration to enforce any law that’s passed as if it were actually the law that its ideologues would have preferred — who have brought this about.  It’s the administration that encouraged the immigration surge and has lied about it and about what’s happening in the camps, all in a context of undermining the rule of law.

The dehumanization of “brown people” is the aspect that progressive historians will remember, neatly forgetting the ideology of the president for whose cause the children are suffering.
