Electric bus fleet, at 14 at $1.072M each, coming to Rhode Island

A new electric bus fleet will be available to public transit riders in Rhode Island. Fourteen New Flyer Xcelsior CHARGE NG buses will be delivered over the next couple of months and replace diesel-fueled buses that are in use on the R-Line, the route with the highest ridership. The buses are battery-electric powered, Gov. Dan McKee said. The R-Line connects Providence and Pawtucket.

Dan McKee, along with labor and higher education officials and officials from Orsted and Eversource, announced Wednesday a new partnership that brings together higher education, workforce development, and labor organizations that is designed to provide state residents with the education and training necessary to work in the energy sector.

Rhode Island permits state classified employees to run for office

Classified state employees are now eligible to run for state elected offices in Rhode Island. The change permits a classified employee to run for the nomination or be a candidate for state office if that position of not fully funded by a federal loan or grant money.

14 Providence police department employees made more than $200,000 in 2021

Luis San Lucas is a captain in the Providence Police Department who was paid $278,194 in 2021, making him the city’s highest paid employee. According to city records, San Lucas earned a salary of $130,299 and garnered another $85,286 in overtime. He also received a payment in 2021 of $60,052 for overtime involving events that the city provides police protection.

Rhode Island transit gets a jolt through $22.3 million RAISE grant

City transit in Newport, Rhode Island, is getting a jolt from taxpayers with a RAISE grant. The $22.3 million project, news of which was shared through congressional news releases on Tuesday, will enable the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority to procure 25 battery-electric buses enabling all Newport-based services to be electric. A release from U.S. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse also said charging infrastructure and facility upgrades are coming.

Poll: Democrats don’t want Biden to run again in 2024

A majority of Democrats do not want President Joe Biden to run for reelection in 2024, according to a new poll. The New York Times/Siena College numbers released Monday show that only 26% of Democratic voters surveyed want Biden to receive the party’s nomination in the next presidential election in 2024. The poll found 64% of Democratic voters want a different candidate to lead their ticket.
