Guaranteed income programs popping up throughout the country

Communities throughout the U.S. are experimenting with social programs that give a “guaranteed income” to some residents with few or no strings attached. An economics professor says universal income could be a more efficient use of taxpayer dollars as long as it replaces many of the more than 100 welfare programs already out there.

Most of the programs are funded by taxpayer dollars and are generally described as “universal basic income” and “guaranteed income,” which share many characteristics but differ slightly. Universal basic income programs are generally open to everyone in the community. Guaranteed income programs target a specific sector of the population, often lower-income individuals.

How Rhode Island’s Student Debt Crisis Compares to Other States

The Biden Administration’s recent announcement regarding student debt relief thrust the topic into the forefront of the news. Under the program, students awarded Pell Grants and who took out loans from the Department of Education will have $20,000 of debt canceled. This has been an exciting few days at our Center, as CEO Stenhouse’s 2021 National Review article, criticizing the tyrannical pandemic mandates of the Governor, is causing quite a spat between Governor McKee and candidate Gorbea … as well as the local media elite.

Sten’s column, which criticized the Governor, was featured in the season’s first negative video campaign ad by Nellie Gorbea against Dan McKee. The great irony is we know that Gorbea would have done the exact same thing as McKee … yet she’s trying to bash him for it!
